Vaginal Fillers

Vaginal fillers are specially formulated to improve and rejuvenate the vulvo-vaginal area. They can be a solution for women who have found the tissue in and around their vagina has thinned and become looser and depleted. Losing tissue in this area can have an impact on personal comfort, sexual enjoyment and affect the appearance of the vulval area.

How do vaginal fillers help?

The procedure of having injections of Hyaluronic Acid fillers restores hydration, elasticity, tone and sensitivity of the vulvo-vaginal area. Hyaluronic acid is directly injected into the affected tissues to improve their quality and to limit vaginal dryness. For the outside of the vaginal area, the labia majora (the outer lips of the vagina, where pubic hair grows), a more elastic gel restores volume and plumpness, protecting the delicate labia minora (inner lips) of the vagina.

Why have vaginal fillers?

A loss of volume in the vulval and vagina area can lead to discomfort and a loss of confidence. Sex may become uncomfortable, and even riding a bike or a horse may be difficult when the protective cushioning tissue is depleted. Fillers can relieve tenderness, as well as enhancing and strengthening the mucosa and structures of the vagina, which in turn, improves appearance.

Who needs vaginal fillers?

Any woman who feels they require more volume and plumpness in the vaginal area should seek advice from a specialist. Women who have been through the menopause or are going through the perimenopause and experiencing a drop in their levels of oestrogen levels could particularly benefit. A deficiency of oestrogen leads to loss of elasticity and the tissue becoming flaccid Woman who have had cancer treatment or after weight loss may also find vaginal fillers helpful.

Are vaginal fillers like facial fillers?

Yes, in that they work in a similar way, and both contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a type of dermal filler. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the body, with the highest concentrations in the joints, eyes, and skin. In the skin hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. However, vaginal fillers are particularly formulated for the delicate genital area. Another difference is, vaginal fillers are not just used for aesthetic reasons, they can help with function too, improving sexual intimacy and allowing women to enjoy activities such as cycling and horse-riding more comfortably.

What happens during the procedure for vaginal fillers?

After taking a detailed medical history and examining you, local anaesthetic gel will be applied to the area treated and held in place with a tampon if required. The area will be disinfected before the injection. There may be some tenderness in the area, but this should settle in a few days. The procedure takes about 20 minutes. Sexual intercourse or vigorous exercise should be avoided for about 5 days after the procedure.

Are vaginal fillers painful?

Local anaesthetic means you should feel little discomfort, if any, during the procedure. There may be some tenderness as the area heals.
